FAQ16 Question: Can you suggest an area of the canal system that would be a suitable learning ground for a novice boater. I would imagine that the area would need to contain locks and bridges that would give the novice a fair chance to develop the skills and experience to take on the other areas of the waterways. Is there an area that can provide this and the canalside pubs etc which are an important part of the canal experience. Answer: One answer is the Llangollen. It has locks and lift bridges, as well as a small staircase and the aqueducts. There is a variety of pubs and several small towns. It is an easy week from several hire boat bases, most of which are easily accessible by train as well as car. A couple of point to watch, however; - There is fairly strong water flow on this canal which makes trips "down" significantly quicker (but not easier) and shorter than trips "up". It is easier to control a boat that is going against the current than one that is going with it. - The section from Trevor to Llangollan would be difficult for a novice. It is suggested that you should do that section last, rather than first.
